Ransomware Cyberattack Hits Hospitals

The Associated Press (AP) reported that hospitals across England experienced a “ransomware” cyberattack, which crippled computer systems, canceled appointments, and downed phone lines, resulting in patients being turned away.

“Ransomware attacks are on the rise. In February 2016, the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in California said it had paid a $17,000 ransom to regain control of its computers from hackers,” per the AP.

Ransomware involves a “denial of service for ransom” via a type of malicious software (malware) that cyber criminals can install on your computer.  Your network can be infected with malicious software through a variety of ways; the most popular are email attachments, fake websites, and phony advertisements.  An unaware victim opens an attachment, goes to a website, or clicks on a false ad and the malware automatically downloads to the computer.  Once installed, ransomware enables criminals to hold your data, files, and cloud access for ransom. This is why regular backups of your files are so important.  If you don’t have your files backed up and choose to pay, the criminals may release your data or simply keep you terminally locked out.

What’s the solution? Healthcare related organizations must move from a reactive to a proactive approach to cyber security and invest in an ongoing risk-management program to keep their networks as secure as possible. While even the most secure networks can have a breach, organizations that establish an internet security plan for their network and implement training with employees to spot internet security events, avert most of the daily threats lurking in the shadows of cyberspace.

Be Proactive. Be Vigilant.
